Florida Vacation News - January 2006

January 20, 2006 09:55 - What Happened to Flamingo?

Everglades National Park is so large it has three entrances -- Everglades City on the Florida Gulf Coast; Shark Valley in the interior, and Flamingo on Florida Bay.

Unfortunately for campers and boaters, the Flamingo campgrounds and boat ramps have been closed due to the effects of hurricanes Katrina and Wilma last year.  In addition, the Flamingo Lodge, a landmark for many years, is also closed.

Will they ever re-open?  The campgrounds may open up sometime in March, but that's an estimate.  The boat ramps will take longer (if ever),  because the inlet to Florida Bay will have to be dredged before it's safe for boats to use it.

If you're wanting to visit the Everglades on your Florida vacation, Shark Valley is the best bet for now.  But if you really want to visit Flamingo in the spring, check with the park service before you go.

January 3, 2006 13:42 - Florida Cruising

Florida cruising can take many forms.  From the big mega-ships destined for the Caribbean, to small boat sunset cruises, a good time can be had by all.

If you're bound for the Caribbean. why not fly into Florida a day or so early?  That way you can see what we have to offer.  You'll also be a lot more rested for the start of your cruise vacation (always a good thing).

If you're along the coast but can't float the money for a big cruise ship, you can try a cruise to either the Bahamas or to nowhere (also known as a gambling cruise).

Not to worry if you are land-locked -- there are all kinds of dinner and sunset cruises along Florida's rivers and lakes.

January 2, 2006 15:03 - Hike It, Bike It, Canoe It on Your Florida Vacation.

Wekiwa Springs is close to Orlando, but worlds away from the ordinary.  Whether you enjoy floating down a scenic Florida river, snorkeling in crystal-clear water, hiking 17 miles of wilderness trails or just enjoy a little piece of paradise, visit Wekiwa Springs State Park.

I've taken the canoe trip from Katie's Landing to "Canoe Beach" inside the park.  It is really and truly awesome!  And for the next few months, Wekiwa will be a great place to hike, bike and paddle -- few or no insects (a big plus in my book).

If you plan on being in the Orlando area and are trying to think of something to do aside from just another theme park, check out a canoe trip at Wekiwa Springs

January 2, 2006 12:10 - What's New in Florida Travel?

So what's new in Florida travel and vacations?  Right now, believe it or not, camping is big.  This is the time of year to enjoy Florida's gorgeous weather!  Here's more Florida camping and campground information.

Hey, that means the Florida State Parks are good bets this time of year!  No (or very few) insects to bother you, and you won't get heatstroke if you take a ranger tour.  Click for more Florida State Park information.

The Caribbean cruise season is getting underway, and Florida is the place to grab one of those big boats.  Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are the big ports, where you will find pretty much all the major cruise lines.  If you have a choice -- leave from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale).  I've been through both ports on cruises and I just think Port Everglades is nicer.
