Yes, this is where the space shuttles and the Apollo, Gemini and Mercury missions left the earth for the
great beyond. And so that is how Florida's Space Coast got its name.
But there is more than just outer space here with the Florida Space Coast attractions - let's take a look.
Kennedy Space Center: OK, this is "space-y", and it is the
biggest attraction in the area. And if you are intrigued with outer
space at all, the Kennedy Space Center is a must-see. I've been a few
times, and it never fails to awe me. I especially like the bus tours
and the IMAX theater. But there are all kinds of things to see, and
you really do need a whole day to experience it. Open every day except
December 25 and certain launch days. 9 AM to 6 PM. Titusville,
FL (321) 449-4444
Old Fashioned
Airboat Rides: You get to explore the southern end of the St.
Johns River on this 90-minute private tour. Wildlife viewing
(alligators are common), and you have the option of day or night rides.
Seems like these are popular, because you do need reservations. Visit
their website and see if there are coupons available (there often are).
Christmas, FL (407) 568-4307
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge: You can drive though
this refuge along the Black Point Wildlife road. There are stops along
the way for special viewing. The Merritt Island National Wildlife
Refuge is famous for its birding opportunities, but if you like eco-tours at
all, you'll probably like this place. Do check the website before you
plan your trip -- they sometimes have closures for improvements to the
Refuge. Open Mon-Fri: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Saturdays 9:00 AM to 5:00
PM, Sundays: November - March: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Titusville, FL
(321) 861-0667
A
Day Away Nature Kayak Tours: Another eco-tour, this time from
the perspective of low down in the water. Because kayaks are so quiet,
you can normally get closer to wildlife than with airboat tours.
Paddle trips are from 1 to 5 hours, or you can arrange for a private tour.
Titusville, FL (321) 268-2655
Brevard Zoo:
Quite a nice zoo, and this is the first one I have heard of that offers a
kayak ride! If you're in the Melbourne, Florida area, I do
suggest that you check it out -- all kinds of animals, exhibits, encounters
and feedings. 9:30 AM to 5:PM. (321) 254-9453
There are just some of the things you can do. If you want some other ideas, how about taking a look at Florida Space Coast Vacations. There's some good information!
You can see that natural attractions are the order of the day, rather than
theme park thrill rides. But Florida's Space Coast does offer a look at
the Florida that we residents know and love.
