New Smyrna Beach, Florida
New Smyrna Beach, Florida is the southern neighbor to Daytona. On the Atlantic coast, New Smyrna has a wide, sandy beach, bountiful waves, plenty to do and lots of resorts and hotels. So why don't you ever hear much about this treasure of a Florida stretch of sun and sand? Let's take a closer look at New Smyrna Beach Florida, and see what it has to offer for your next vacation!
Ready? First a tiny bit of trivia and it's location, then onto the beach we go!
About New Smyrna
As far as location goes, it's on the Florida Atlantic coast. It's south of Daytona Beach and north of Canaveral National Seashore, which puts it in northern Central Florida. It's actually one of the closest beaches to Orlando! That's why I'm not sure why people say, "What beach is that?" Ah well, better for the rest of us who do manage to find our ways onto the sand!
Here's something interesting about this city on the sea -- it's official motto is cygnus inter anates...which translated means "A swan among ducks." Interesting to say the least, and perhaps it tells you about this Florida vacation spot.
Here's something else rather unusual; it's one of the few beaches left in Florida that you can drive your car directly onto! I must admit, it's great for convenience -- no lugging your chairs, coolers, umbrellas and other beach goodies to the sand. One word of caution, however - take your car through a car wash after a day on the sand; salt water is corrosive!
This is a wide beach, which is one of the reasons you can drive onto it -- there is room for traffic, people and play. You can build sand castles, plunk your beach chair down in a tidal pool, surf or enjoy the waves.
The northern Atlantic Florida beaches tend to have a lot of sand bars off the beach. Be forwarned that while you might see people a fair distance out in what looks like thigh-deep water, you may have to swim a short distance to get to that bar (depending on if it's high or low tide).
At low tide, there are tidal pools (well, kind of) where water is captured from flowing seaward. These areas are usually just ankle deep, and as long as you're out of the way of traffic, a nice place to stay cool by putting your feet in the water..
Staying at the Beach
Although it doesn't have the number of resorts and condos that Daytona has, you'll still find plenty of beach resorts and hotels. One place to consider is Coconut Palms II Beach Resort. Another thought is Holiday Inn, if you're looking for something a bit less expensive. And of course for you folks who love B&Bs, think about the Longboard Inn Bed and Breakfast.
These a just three options for staying in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Although you won't find any more "mom and pop" hotels, due to the hurricane seasons of 2004-2005, the good news is that the hotels and resorts that are there are once again in great condition, after all the re-construction.
Things To Do in New Smyrna Beach, Florida
Obviously, the number one "attraction" is right outside the door -- the beach! As I mentioned, it's wide and lovely.
Surfing is one pasttime that is popular here -- the geography of the beach means that there are pretty good sized waves at times! So if you like surfing, do bring your board with you.
This isn't a beach with a lot of concessions, other than renting chairs, umbrellas and rafts. The last time I went, there were snack bars on the beach (another plus for being able to drive right onto the beach) with things like burgers, hot dogs, sodas and such.
Another pasttime that you might enjoy is wildlife viewing. You'll see brown pelicans, gulls and plenty of shorebirds scurrying along at the waterline.
The city of New Smyrna Beach doesn't really have the non-beach attractions that Daytona has, but it is close to Orlando. And that means that Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and Sea World are all possible day trip destinations.
What's the Weather Like?
The weather here is pretty mild overall. Obviously, the summertime days are pretty hot, but a steady ocean breeze cools things down a bit. An umbrella isn't a bad idea, and sunscreen is very definitely necessary!
Spring and Autumn are warm, but not as hot. Late Spring and early Autumn are great times here!
When it comes to Winter, don't plan on sunbathing on the beach; it can get quite chilly, even if it doesn't usually get to freezing. You might get lucky and strike a set of days in the mid 70's with plenty of sunshine, but you're best off planning on shorts or slacks rather than bathing suits.
All in all, New Smyrna Beach, Florida is a great place for a vacation. So why not check it out and see what a beautiful, wide and sandy beach it has. Not to mention the awesome water, waves and sunshine. Ahh, the pleasures of a Florida beach vacation!
