St. Augustine Art Walk
The St. Augustine Art Walk in Florida is a special event in October. You see, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the people participating raise money to help research and fight breast cancer.
Although the subject of the walk is serious, the event itself has become known for its art raffle. An average of 10 paintings are raffled each year, with the proceeds going to various breast cancer foundations. Not to mention other raffles and fund-raisers after the walk itself.
Even the Red Train trolley becomes involved, shuttling people from one participating gallery to the next, where the individual raffles are held. And while you can walk to each individual gallery, the Red Train makes sure you arrive on time for the raffle!
The St. Augustine Art Walk is held in the Historic District, which makes things very interesting indeed! Remember, St. Augustine is the United States's oldest continuously inhabited city.
When Is the Art Walk?
It's held in the beginning of October; you can find the exact date each year at the Art Walk for Breast Cancer site.
Can't make the art walk itself? Then why not head over to the Casa Monica Hotel for a plethora of other raffles! There's also the "Think Pink" weekend with a variety of activities.
Why am I mentioning something like a breast cancer fund raiser in a site about Florida vacations? Well, St. Augustine is really a tourist city, and the event is held in the primary tourist distict -- that makes it a very special exception. Also, my husband is originally from St. Augustine, and we visit there from time to time.
If your vacation plans bring you here in the beginning of October, why not think about participating? You're helping a good cause, seeing some lovely artwork and touring the Historic District, all rolled into one enjoyable evening.
